Abstract:

Background: Prisoners are susceptible to dermatological DISEASES due to their communal life in prison, high-risk behaviours and being under stress. The aim of our project was to investigate the prevalence of dermatological DISEASES in an Iranian prison.Materials and methods: In this observational-cross sectional study 1404 prisoners were randomly selected and examined by two dermatologists. Results: All the examinees were male prisoners. Their average age was 34 +/- 11.2 and average time of imprisonment was 1.9+/- 2.8 years. 7% of cases (97) complained of generalized itching and 10% (140) had a localized itching. Tattoos were seen on the body of 261 prisoners (19%). 783 person (56%) (CI 95%: 53-59%) had a dermatological disorder and 621 (44%) were totally healthy. Truncal Acne Vulgaris was the most common disorder that was seen in 184 cases (13%). 158 cases (11.2%) had Tinea Versicolor. Other DISEASES were Facial Acne Vulgaris in 78 cases (5.5%), Dry SKIN in 75 cases (5.3%) and Hand Eczema in 55 cases (4%). The average age of patients with Facial and Truncal Acne was lower. However, Acne was seen more in the patients with history of addiction. Scabies was more prevalent in crowded rooms. Conclusions: The most prevalent SKIN DISEASES were truncal Acne and tinea versicolor; our finding revealed that scabies prevalence is meaningfully related to duration of imprisonment. It is recommended that all the prisoners should be examined before entering the prison and also periodically during their imprisonment in order to receive suitable treatment and decrease the risk of transmitting contagious DISEASES in prison.

Abstract:

Sports and the development of nations are very much intertwined. Sports dermatology is a growing discipline. Athletes’ SKIN DISEASES are a distinct group of DISEASES, and that repetitive physical activity combined with environmental stressors puts the athlete at the highest level of risk. The purpose of this study is to equip physicians with basic knowledge of SKIN DISEASES in athletes. Lack of knowledge about the role of exercise in the pathogenesis of SKIN DISEASES can lead to delayed diagnosis and consequently, incorrect treatment. SKIN DISEASES can be caused directly or indirectly by exercise; there are some SKIN DISEASES which exist in a person but appear or intensify with the onset of exercise. In general, before an athlete should exercise, he should be examined dermatologically to prevent the spread of SKIN DISEASES. They should be considered especially for lesions on the less noticeable areas such as the back and inner side of ears. It is better to prepare a map of the patient’ s lesions that can be tracked over time, which the possibility of following their changes (Body Mapping). Athletes should have no general symptoms such as fever for 72 hours before exercising. There should be no secretory SKIN lesions, otherwise, it is necessary to receive treatments before going to the gym and using the equipment to ensure that the disease does not spread to others.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of SKIN DISEASES in kidney transplant recipients.Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on 233 kidney transplant recipients in Ekbatan Hospital of Hamedan in 2004. The patients were examined by a dermatologist and diagnosis was made on the basis of clinical observations. Biopsies and scraping of the lesions were taken whenever necessary. Results: Of the patients, 226 (97%) suffered from one or more SKIN lesions. The most common lesions were drug related, including hypertrichosis, gingival hyperplasia, acne, and cushingoid feature which were detected in 86.7% of the patients. Also, infectious and premalignant or malignant lesions (actinic keratosis, squamous cell carcinoma, and basal cell carcinoma) were seen in 48.9% and 14.2% of the patients. The mean duration of immunosuppressive therapy was significantly higher in patients with infectious SKIN DISEASES (P<.001).Conclusion: SKIN lesions are a significant problem in kidney transplant recipients. A careful monitoring of these patients is recommended in order to detect these lesions in early stages and treat them.

Abstract:

Background and aim: Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease with multiple complications. SKIN tag is a pedunculated papule, which is more common in women and has been suggested as a cutaneous marker of diabetes mellitus. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of diabetes mellitus in patients with SKIN tags.Materials and methods: This descriptive study was done on 100 patients with SKIN tags. The investigation included fasting blood sugar (FBS) and glucose tolerance test (OTT).Results: 66 patients had normal FBS, 27 had diabetes mellitus, 5 had impaired OTT and 2 had impaired fasting glucose. Over all, 34 had abnormal glucose metabolism, 7 were unaware of their metabolic abnormality. Among 40 hospitalized patients 50% had abnormal glucose metabolism meanwhile 23.3% of 60 outpatients had this abnormality (p<0.01). No association was seen between BMI, obesity, gender, location and number of SKIN tags with abnormal metabolism of glucose. Conclusion: It is recommended to consider SKIN tags as a cetaceous marker for abnormality of glucose metabolism.

Abstract:

Background and aim: Non-melanoma SKIN cancers (NMSC) are one of the most prevalent malignancies of the human. Although the morality rate is not high for these cancers, they may cause high morbility for the patients. In addition to the SKIN type, factors such as sun exposure, head and neck radiotherapy, inappropriate use of sunscreen and cultural changes may increase the incidence of these cancers. The objective of this study was to determine NMSC in Isfahan.Materials and Methods: We used data of the cancer resistery center for performing this study and the incidence of NMSC per 100,000 populations was determined. Results: Overall 1681 cases were registered. The incidence of NMSC was calculated to be 10.67/100,000population. The most common site for BCC and SCC was middle face. Conclusion: NMSC incidence in Isfahan is lower than west countries although this incidence is 10.67/100,000in a year. It means that 5-6 thousand cases of NMSC occur in Iran each year. We can prevent its morbidity and mortality by early correct diagnosis.
